This year, South Africa comes to Malmö. On June 5 Malmö Museums inaugurates three exhibitions that will be the starting point for a whole year of events and activities on the theme of South Africa.
The exhibition Mandela 6 June 2009-31 January 2010, is about the peace icon Nelson Mandela's life and his different roles - as a leader, comrade, negotiator, prisoner and statesman. It is now shown for the first time outside South Africa and is produced by the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Museum.
At Swedes and South Africa, 6 June 2009-31 January 2010, people from Sweden and South Africa relates their commitment to the fight against apartheid, both in the political arena and in everyday life. The exhibition is carried out in collaboration with Sida.
The Room for Photography show Then & Now, June 6 to October 4, with eight South African photographers work from the period during and after apartheid: David Goldblatt, George Hallet, Eric Miller, Cedric Nunn, Guy Tillim, Paul Weinberg, Graeme Williams, and Gisèle Wulfsohn.
The September 20, Digging for Democracy open, which tells about the vineyard Solms-Delta, where a museum has been built over a place which in a way, holds the entire South African history, and which is a unique example of how cultural heritage and history may influence the development of society.
With the South Africa theme Malmö Museum highlights issues around democracy and human rights and tell people who want to influence the present and the future.
